Five things to understand before taking on a new monthly payment.

The essentials

Start with the amount you actually need and the reason for borrowing. List the proposed payment alongside your essential bills, existing debts, and irregular expenses. A lender’s approval is not the same as knowing a payment fits comfortably into your own budget. Leave room for changes in income or unavoidable costs.

Put it into practice

Compare the APR, the length of the loan, fees, and the total amount repayable. Ask about early repayment and missed-payment charges. Check whether the rate is fixed or variable and whether any security is required. Read the final agreement carefully; the terms can differ from an initial illustration.

Before you decide

Use this guide as a starting point for your own questions. Check the current terms in your documents and the rules where you live. Keep a short written record of the options you compare, the details you still need, and your next step.
