Know whether an asset is tied to the money you borrow.
The essentials
A secured loan is backed by an asset under the agreement. If repayments fail, that asset may be at risk. An unsecured loan does not use specific collateral in the same way, but missed payments can still have serious financial consequences. Neither label tells you whether the loan is affordable.
Put it into practice
Ask exactly what security is required and how enforcement would work in your location. Compare total costs and check for additional fees. Think about how you would cope if income stopped temporarily. Avoid pledging an essential asset without understanding the consequences and considering other ways to meet the expense.
Before you decide
Use this guide as a starting point for your own questions. Check the current terms in your documents and the rules where you live. Keep a short written record of the options you compare, the details you still need, and your next step.
